Jim McShane was born and raised on Long Island. He received his Master of Library Science degree from Indiana University in 1989 and began his career as the Slavic Language Specialist at Queens Borough Public Library in Jamaica, NY. Since then he has held positions in Topeka, KS, Hamilton, MA, Suffield, CT and, now, Rapid City. He has been library director there since 2013.
The Rapid City Public Library serves Rapid City, South Dakota and surrounding areas. With locations in downtown Rapid City and a partner library in General Beadle Elementary school, the library brings print, audiovisual, and digital materials, computer access, a rich local history collection, and more to an average of 31,000 patrons each month.
